Wendy Sacks on Housing, Land Use and Water in the Commissioner Race

Republican Wendy Sacks is running for the open District 3 seat on the Eagle County Board of Commissioners against Democrat Kathleen Brendza. A valley resident of more than 40 years, Sacks is a real estate developer and general contractor who lives on a hay and horse property north of Eagle and serves as treasurer of the Eagle County Conservation District board.

In a side-by-side look at the candidates published October 9 by Epic Colorado Life, Sacks laid out where she stands on the issues facing the county:

  • Housing. She says the county should look closely at the terms of every housing agreement, because an "affordable" label doesn't guarantee rents that local workers can actually afford. She also wants simpler approvals and is exploring property-tax relief for primary residents.

  • Land use. Sacks wants the mapping errors and unclear wording in the county's land-use code rewrite fixed before it is adopted, and wants residents to see the final version first.

  • School funding. She opposes Ballot Issue 5B. She supports keeping good teachers, but argues any request for more money should come with a clear plan for how it will be spent.

  • Water. Sacks puts Upper Basin interests first, calls for close scrutiny of transmountain diversions and proposed reservoirs, and supports working with partners such as the Colorado River District.

Every Eagle County voter can vote in the District 3 race. Ballots are due by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3.
